Chess

 

Cycling

  • Cycle rides (Dom Sansom, Ph: 992-2123, dom@cyclingfiji.org). Saturdays, 7am, ROC, Dolphins Plaza, Loftus Street. Route: Queen Elizabeth Drive. Duration: Approx. 1 hour. Sundays, longer rides or races are organized. Need your own bike and helmet. 

 

 

Fishing

  • Uprising Resort: Contact Mahen 708 0201; 750-800 FJD for half day game fishing (UN rate). All gear provided, reliable boat.

  • Tackle shop at Pacific Harbour Cultural Village: Boat charters are also available (Contact Calan) Specialized in Giant Trevally; charges are approx 550 FJD for a four hour trip with all gear provided. Calan, the owner of the tackle shop is also the chair of the local fishing club "twisted leaders" and proves very knowledgeable on best fishing areas.

 

 

Golf

  • The Pearl Championship Golf Course (Pacific Harbour, Ph:  990-8125)

 

 

Gyms

  • Hyundai Fitness Center (Laucala Bay end of Queen Elizabeth Drive; Ph: 3312 177 ext. 128). Offers aerobics, yoga and other classes. Weekdays 5am-8.30pm, Fridays only closes at 8pm. Weekends and Public Holidays 6am -2pm. $3 casual visit. $2 for aerobics on Mon- Fri, 5.30 – 6.30 pm. Membership for 1 month - $25, 3 months - $45, 6 months $80, one year - $150.

  • USP Gym (Laucala Bay campus; Ph: 323 1000). Equipment is more modern than Hyundai Gym. Weekdays 5am-9pm, Weekends 8am – 5pm. Membership - $40 per month.

  • Metro Fitness Centre (24 Williamson Road, Ph: 330 0369). Monday- Friday 5am – 8 pm, Saturday 9 am- 3 pm, closed Sunday. Membership: $30/month, $75 for 3 months. Yoga /Boxercise and personal training also available.

  • Zenergy, Pure Fiji Yoga and Fitness Studio (52 Karsanji St Ph: 338 3611; facebook.com/PurefijiZenergy) Offers step, yogalates, body pump, body combat and abbs classes. Morning and afternoon classes available, 6 FJD per class.

 

 

Hash House Harriers

  • Suva Hash: Contact Ben Hazelman Ph: 999 3583.  Every Monday evenings, fun-run/ walk around Suva environs and socializing afterwards.

 

 

Hiking

  • The Rucksack Club (Meetings held at St. Andrews Church, corner of Gordon & Goodenough St). A great little outdoors adventure club; organises weekend excursions and hikes out of Suva. Meetings are held on the 2ND Wednesday of every month at 6:45 pm. Guest speakers’ talks are about 30 minutes and begin just after 7 pm. Usually a wide range of topics on Fiji and the environment, Annual Membership: $10; activity charges are separate. You must sign up to their mailing list to become a member.

  • Talanoa Treks - organizes overland and day trips for the hiking enthusiast.  Check out their website and Facebook page for schedule and more info.

  • Colo i Suva Rainforest Park (11km north of Suva, along Princes Road):  Really lovely natural rainforest with bush walks, streams, waterfalls, swimming holes.  Pay first at the Visitor Information Centre on the left-hand side of the road, then it is possible to drive into the park on the right-hand side of the road.  Don’t leave valuables in your car.  Entry is only $1 for a local, so make sure you take your UN ID Card with you (otherwise it is $5).

Outrigger Paddling

  • Fiji Outrigger: Contact Sheena Hughes Ph: 992 8841.  Monthly regattas, 4+ Clubs, calendar of events e-mailed to members.

  • National Canoe Centre: (end of Queen Elizabeth Rd, Suva Point; Contact Denise Rosenblatt, President (interim); Ph: 323-2690; rosenblatt_d@usp.ac.fj). Tuesday and Thursdays, 5:30 pm or 5:30 am depending on the time of year. Membership Fees: Adults $100, plus Fiji Outrigger affiliation $20=$120. Lower for tertiary students and under 19 juniors.

 

 

Sailing

  • Royal Suva Yacht Club: (Queens Road, Korovou, Ph: 331-2921).  Offers marina jetty for boating, fishing and surfing comps; B-class sailing, regattas. Yachts are not available for hire, but this is the place to meet people who can inform you about buying a boat or learning to sail.

 

 

Scuba Diving

Fiji boasts several premier dive sites throughout the country although they are found outside Suva.  There are three live-aboard packages available. Dive operators and sites can easily be identified with a quick internet search.

 

  • The Suva Dive Club: offers PADI training in Suva, local dive trips and information on the best dive spots around the country.  Ph: 927 9938

  • Aqua-Trek Beqa: (Pacific Harbour within The Pearl South Pacific compound, Ph: 345-0324) Famous Shark dive operator. Winner of international awards. Currents can be very strong in these areas.

  • Dive Centre Fiji: (Yacht Club, Ph: 330-0599) Maintenance and overhauling of diving equipment of limited brands.

Swimming

  • Aquatic Centre (Laucala Bay Road; Ph: 331 7627). An Olympic sized pool and a smaller pool.  Generally clean. Entry: adult FJD 5.10, child FJD 3 or one year pass $150.

  • Olympic Pool (entrance is on the left hand side of the Vineyard Palace building on Victoria Parade). Enormous pool (wider than a standard Olympic pool) incorporating a toddlers’ pool.  Faded art deco buildings, including original individual changing sheds. Open from 9 am to 7 pm, $1.69 a visit.

  • USP Pool (near USP Library, Laucala Bay Campus). 25m pool, casual swimming available.  Pleasant leafy setting.

 

 

Tennis/Squash

  • Victoria Park (Knollys Street; Ph: 330 5599). Tennis and squash courts, private and group lessons available; Contact Junior Ph: 996 5380.

  • Albert Park (corner opposite Fiji Museum, Ratu Cakobau Road; Ph: 331-1726).  Grass tennis courts operated by the Suva Lawn Tennis Club.

  • Defence Club (57 Gordon Street; Ph: 330 5038). Squash courts, available for members only.

  • USP Tennis Courts (USP Campus, Laucala Rd entrance, Ph: 323 2625) 

  • Tennis Coach- Junior 996 5380.  Tennis coach who teaches at USP tennis courts.

 

 

Triathlon

  • Fiji Triathlon Association (Swimming, Cycling and Running).; Contact Janette Kaipio; janettek01@gmail.com.  Ocean swims, super sprints and super triathlons organized at Pacific Harbour, Natadola and the Yasawas.
