Getting around Suva

Get hold of a copy of the current phone book:  the section at the front contains the best map of Suva (and of the other main towns in Fiji).  There is also a map of Suva City published by the Government printer which is available from some bookshops and Fiji Post shops – be warned, there are some inaccuracies in this map. Google map can be a good electronic substitute.

Central Suva is compact, and easy to get around on foot; however, it is not considered a safe place to walk around at night – drive or take a taxi.

Taxis

These are cheap and plentiful, and can be flagged down on the street.  They are fitted with meters, and most drivers use them!  Tipping is not expected in Fiji.

There are numerous taxi companies, some with just a few cars.  You will probably want to find one or two companies with their base not far from your residence.

The following are some central Suva companies used by LESA members:

Buses

There are very good local bus services – cheap (around 50 – 80 cents) and are always an interesting experience. It is a cheap mode of transport around town and convenient. Most of the buses run every 10-15 minutes during peak hours. You will find them particularly enjoyable if you like lots of loud music.

There are new bus cards which have come into use, which can be bought at Vodafone outlets in MHCC, Ivi Triangle etc. You can use the bus card in any of the buses and it helps when you don’t want to be searching for change and if you are a regular bus user.

If you find a taxi driver you like and who drives safely, most are more than happy for you to contact them directly for longer rides, especially to Nausori Airport or to Nadi.

If needed (particularly for children’s car seats), it’s also worth noting drivers who have working seatbelts in the back of the car – most don’t!  Drivers used by LESA members include:

  • Naren:  992-5501

  • Eddie: 994 6506

  • Francis: 924-6380

All converge on the main bus terminal beside the Suva Market.  Some of the routes are:

  • Laucala Bay (green bus) – does a circuit along Queen Elizabeth Drive and along the seawall, past USP and back into town

  • Nasese (green bus) – does a circuit through Domain/Muanikau, down Ratu Sukuna to the seawall and back into town

  • Vatuwaqa (orange bus) – goes through Flagstaff, past USP, along Fletcher Road to Nabua, and back the same way to town

  • Raiwaqa (red and white bus) – goes through Flagstaff, and along Grantham Road, and back the same way to town

  • Lami (blue Shoreline bus)

It can be difficult sometimes, as some bus  stops do not have markings, but most bus stops around town have a sign post saying “BUS STOP”, or you can wave them down .The other way is to see the name/ and color of the bus, be familiar with the route, or ask the bus driver where it is that you need to go for guidance.

IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO TRAVEL IN LOCAL MINIBUSES!

Car Parking

Some curbside parking is available for 80 cents per hour – tickets available from Pay and Park machines.

There are also car parks (mainly attached to shopping centres), which include the following:

  • Suva Central: entrance is on Pratt Street; direct access to ground and first floors of Suva Central

  • MHCC: entrance is on Thomson Street

  • MidCity Plaza: entrance is on Waimanu Road

  • Civic Centre Foreshore: large uncovered parking area near Tiko’s; entrance is beside the Civic Centre

  • Tappoo City: entrance is on Scott Street (first 60 minutes are free with the sales receipt)

  • Public Parking lot next to JJ's on the Park

Beware of parking in loading zones or parks designated for taxis – there are some aggressive tow truck drivers ready to pounce!  If your car gets towed away, you can retrieve it (for FJD 80) from the Civic Centre Foreshore car park. All parking tickets are to be paid at the Suva City Council.
